Samsung’s tests yield record-breaking 7.5Gbps 5G speed

Samsung’s tests yield record-breaking 7.5Gbps 5G speed
While we mostly know Samsung as a consumer electronics manufacturer, especially of smartphones, the company's Research & Development is also obsessed about that one crucial aspect of the mobile experience that makes smartphones and tablets worth their price: Internet connections. While many parts of the world are still adapting to 4G LTE networks, Samsung, as well as other Korean companies, are already toying around with the next generation, obviously called 5G. Now it's R&D department is boasting of the fastest 5G speeds reached to date no just from a stationary test but also from a fast moving vehicle.

In the stationary test, Samsung was able to reach an average of 7.5 Gbps over a 28 Ghz 5G line. Considering that the fastest LTE network, the LTE-Advanced or LTE-A, only reaches theoretical downlink speeds of 225 Mbps, that is definitely an improvement, around 30 times in fact. But Samsung notes that this test is also special not just in the speed but also in the context. Supposedly, this is the first 5G test done outdoors and not in a stable, controlled, and sanitized indoor laboratory. According to Samsung, outdoor tests have so far been avoided due to issues of short communication ranges, which the company has alleviated with its Hybrid Adaptive Array Technology.
Not content with just testing 5G outdoors, Samsung also wanted to see how the network performs inside moving vehicles, because we all use our smartphones and tablets while commuting and sometimes while driving as well. To go to extremes, the researchers put the mobile network station inside a car traveling at 100 km/h. The data speeds might not be as fast as the stationary test, but the results are groundbreaking nonetheless. It clocked speeds of 1.2 Gbps of uninterrupted, stable connection. Inside a moving object.

Skype Qik: Microsoft launches new video messaging app; available for Android, iOS, Windows Phone

Microsoft-owned Skype unveiled a new app enabling users to send short video messages to stay "connected between calls."
The smartphone app called Skype Qik allows users to create and send videos up to 42 seconds long. The new service seeks to help Microsoft catch up to rivals in the fast-growing mobile messaging space.
It takes some features from Twitter's Vine - which allows six-second videos -- and the ephemeral messaging service Snapchat. With Qik, the messages disappear in two weeks, while Snapchats are gone after being viewed.
Skype Qik: Microsoft launches new video messaging app; available for Android, iOS, Windows Phone

The new video chat app Skype Qik allows users to create and send videos up to 42 seconds long. Each video lasts exactly 2 weeks.

"Skype Qik makes video conversations more spontaneous and fun so you don't have to wait until your next call to connect with your favorite people," said a blog post from Microsoft's Dan Chastney and Piero Sierra.
The Qik app is available for phones using Apple's iOS, the Google Android platform and Microsoft's own Windows Phone.
Qik brings Microsoft into the red-hot segment of mobile messaging, following Facebook's multibillion-dollar acquisition of WhatsApp, Other popular messaging services include Asia-based Line and Viber -- which was bought this year by Japan's Rakuten for $900 million.

LG Sees Jump in Android Web Traffic Share; Strong G3 Sales Attributed

lg_android_web_traffic_growth_chart_chitika.jpg
According to a recent Android Web traffic distribution report, LG has recorded the largest usage share growth from June to September, with 1.7 percent, compared to other Android smartphone or tablet brands in the US and Canada. The Q3 Android Web traffic distribution report, released by ad network Chitika on Tuesday, indicates LG's user share grew to 10.4 percent in Q3, up from 8.7 percent in the previous quarter. Chitika reports LG's Q3 growth is continuing a trend for the company in the US and Canada, and it had posted a usage share jump of 0.6 percent between March and June.
Chitika points to strong sales of the LG G3 success as the likely contributor for the company's recent usage share jump. Notably LG had launched the G3 smartphone in May, and announced it would shortly exceed the 10 million sales mark in August.
Samsung at the end of Q3 is still leading the space a market share of 57.4 percent, an increase of 1 percent from 56.4 percent at the end of Q2. Chitika attributes summer discounts on the Galaxy S5 as the likely contributor to growth.
While few brands so gains of 0.1 percent in Chitika's Q3 reports, some brands saw a large share drop. HTC's saw a drop of 0.7 percent (down from 5.5 percent to 4.8 percent), Google 0.4 percent (down from 4.0 percent to 3.6 percent), Motorola 0.3 percent (down from 6.7 percent to 6.4 percent) and Sony 0.3 percent (down from 1.2 percent to 0.9 percent).
The report also suggests that there is a huge gap between the traffic from smartphones as opposed to tablets, with the current 81 percent to 19 percent split widening by 2 percentage points since the last study in June by Chitika. The report also reports the comparative Web traffic share of Android and iOS, with the latter commanding 65 percent in Q3.

Oracle India faces bribery charges; second episode for IT giant in India

(This is the second such episode for Oracle in India. Two years ago, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had filed a complaint against Oracle alleging that the company's Indian subsidiary had possibly indulged in bribery or embezzlement.)

Oracle India looks to be in the middle of yet another bribery issue, and multiple sources told TOI that Sandeep Mathur's sudden exit as managing director of the company is linked to this.

Mathur quit soon after returning from an Oracle conference in San Francisco earlier this month. Shailender Kumar, group VP-key accounts for Oracle India, has taken over as interim MD.

This is the second such episode for Oracle in India. Two years ago, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had filed a complaint against Oracle alleging that the company's Indian subsidiary had possibly indulged in bribery or embezzlement. Oracle agreed to pay a $2 million penalty to settle the SEC's charges.

The latest concerns have allegedly been triggered by compliance issues arising from a database contract that Oracle had won from the Andhra Pradesh police department a few years back. TOI has learnt that the issue came to light when an anonymous whistleblower wrote an email to Oracle alleging that one of its channel partners violated its contract norms to win the contract. Sources said that action may be taken against several Oracle India officials.

TOI sent a mail to Oracle detailing the charges being made, but the company said it would not comment on the matter.

Mathur was responsible for multiple lines of business: technology, applications, systems and Fusion Middleware as well as driving growth across public sector and key accounts. Prior to his role as MD, he was VP-technology at Oracle India. Mathur joined Oracle in 2003 as director of Oracle Direct, North America sales.

In the previous SEC investigation, it was found that Oracle India secretly parked with distributors a portion of the proceeds from certain sales to the Indian government and put the money to unauthorized use, creating the potential for bribery or embezzlement. Oracle India's distributors allegedly held approximately $2.2 million of the proceeds in unauthorized side funds.

The SEC alleged that Oracle India employees would then direct its distributors to disburse payments out of the unauthorized side funds to purported local "vendors". "Several of the "vendors" were merely storefronts that did not provide any services. Oracle failed to accurately record these side funds on the company's books and records, and failed to implement or maintain a system of effective internal accounting controls to prevent improper side funds in violation of the FCPA, which requires public companies to keep books and records that accurately reflect their operations," SEC said.

Several MNCs operating in India have over the years been investigated for violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) of the US that bars bribing officials of foreign governments. Following such an investigation of Walmart in Mexico, the retailer initiated an investigation in 2012 into allegations of bribery in its India unit. Several executives in the India unit were suspended and some quit.

OnePlus May Develop Windows Smartphone

OnePlus One
OnePlus has gone from an unknown brand to one of the most talked about Android manufacturers in just under a year, even if the overall sales of OnePlus One are still much smaller than Samsung, HTC and other Android manufacturers.
Director of OnePlus Carl Pei said to the Economic Times: "We have had discussions with Microsoft over a Windows Phone smartphone," he said. "We are still looking into it."

Microsoft has been in "discussions" with quite a few companies over the past year, including HTC, Samsung, Sony and smaller players in India and China on the topic of Windows Phone, trying to pull as many manufacturers as possible into the third largest mobile OS.
OnePlus has managed to bring a lot of interest to their one device, the OnePlus One. If they can do the same on Windows Phone with the invite system, it could prove even better for Microsoft, which needs that kind of attachment from customers.
That said, however, OnePlus is a significantly smaller manufacturer than Samsung or HTC and likely has fewer than 500,000 sales. Next year, OnePlus might expand facilities, but if it's already struggling to keep up with demand on one phone, two might be a push too far.

Mozilla to Disable Encryption Feature in Next Firefox Browser Due to 'Poodle' Bug

Mozilla to Disable Encryption Feature in Next Firefox Browser Due to 'Poodle' Bug

The Firefox Logo (Reuters)
Mozilla said it will disable Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption in the latest version of its Firefox web browser that will be released on Nov. 25 after a security bug called "Poodle" was discovered in a web encryption technology.
"By exploiting this vulnerability, an attacker can gain access to things like passwords and cookies, enabling him to access a user's private account data on a website," Mozilla said in its blog.

SSL 3.0 will be disabled by default in Firefox 34, Mozilla said. The code to disable the security protocol will be available shortly via Mozilla Nightly, an in-development version of Mozilla's browser.

Mozilla also said that Firefox 35 will support a generic Transport Layer Security (TLS) downgrade protection mechanism called SCSV (Signaling Cipher Suite Value), as a precautionary measure.

Servers supporting SCSV can prevent attacks that rely on insecure fallback.

The Poodle bug, which stands for Padding Oracle On Downloaded Legacy Encryption, was recently uncovered by Google Inc researchers. It could allow hackers to steal data from within an encrypted transaction.

Google Glass Can Now Show All Notifications From Your Android Phone

google_glass_google_plus.jpg
The search giant on Tuesday announced the Notification Sync feature for Google Glass for Android smartphones, which brings all the notifications of the paired device on to the heads-up display - previously, only notifications from select compatible apps were shown. Google says that it will roll out the Notification Sync update to Glass this week, and an updated My Glass app (v3.3.0) will also be required, one that will be available from Wednesday.
"Today we're launching Notification Sync on Glass, which means you can see your Android phone app notifications at a glance. You may have already seen this with Android Wear, but now when you put Glass on, you can get the information you need when you need it-all without taking your phone out of your pocket," said company on Google+ post.
Google has also posted a small video for instructions (see below). Users will need to turn on Notification sync from the app settings and allow MyGlass access to all notifications posted by the system or any installed app.
Previously, Google had updated Glass with the ability to access all contacts on the headset. Making the announcement in August, Google Glass team had detailed that users will be able to find 20 contacts by voice command, while the rest can be accessed by swiping. The Mountain View firm had allowed Glass users to choose how they message people via the headset, with a tap on a contact showing options for Hangouts, email or SMS.

Apple, Samsung set to clash ahead of Diwali

Two iconic handset companies are set for a titanic clash on October 17, looking to cash in on festive demand ahead of Diwali. Samsung on Tuesday unveiled its latest flagship Galaxy Note 4 device, which will go on sale from Friday , when Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will also become available.

The Note 4 - launched globally about a month ago is positioned to take on the Apple iPhone 6 Plus on pricing, even as the Korean major's dominance of both the overall phone market and the fast-growing smartphone segment faces a growing threat from Indian handset makers.

The 5.7-inch screen Note 4 is priced at Rs 58,300, lower than the 16 GB variant of the 5.5-inch screen iPhone 6 Plus, which is available at Rs 62,500 for pre-order. The 16 GB variant of the iPhone 6 costs Rs 53,500 for pre-order. "We're launching it at the briskest pace that we could get it to India, which happens to be on October 17, which also brings in Diwali," said Asim Warsi, vice president for mobile & IT at Samsung India, when asked if Samsung had strategically decided to steal Apple's thunder in India in this premium segment.

"The Indian consumer is a very rational consumer. He will be a thrifty buyer even if he has money , and will judge, compare and make a reasonably informed decision," Warsi added.

Samsung will come out with 'affordability aids' such as EMI offerings, debit card-based offers and non-banking finance options for consumers.

Analysts feel lack of innovation has been the Achilles' heel for Samsung in recent times, which led to limited sales of its flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone, although the company reiterates it met its internal expectations. The chaebol expects an almost 60% decline in operating profit to $3.8 billion in the third quarter of 2014, its fourth straight quarterly drop.

Samsung, though, is pegging the Note 4 as a huge technological advancement over models launched in the past three years in the large-screen smartphone category. It is also banking on loyalty and is expecting a majority of the over 1 million Note users in India to upgrade, Warsi said.

The mobile phone maker has a 29% share of the smartphone market in India, followed by Micromax with 18%. Samsung has 17% of the overall handset space in India, while Micromax comes close with 14%, according to market research firm Interna tional Data Corporation.

Samsung is looking forward to the October-December quarter, during which sales of electronic and consumer products rise due to the festive season, gifting and discounts. Warsi said Samsung is expected to clock sales exceeding the industry growth of 2025% in this quarter because of devices launched in the entrylevel, mid-range and high-end segments over the past few months. The company introduced the Galaxy Alpha for Rs 39,990 last week.

About the war between online and offline retailers in India, especially in the mobile phone space where websites offer bigger discounts than traditional stores, Warsi said Samsung will sell from all platforms wherever consumers are present.

"We've had engagements with online platforms since their inception, which will continue. There is a visible growth in consumers shopping online, so we will be available there. But we're not choosing channels," he said.

Facebook users can now comment via stickers

Facebook users can now comment via stickers

The popular Facebook stickers can now be used to comment on the Facebook posts and photos via Facebook app.
Since the rollout of Facebook stickers in the Messenger app, users have become accustomed to communicate via them. And now these popular stickers are making their way to the comments section of your posts and photos.

This announcement came from Bob Baldwin, one of the engineers on the project, via a Facebook post. He wrote, "Stickers have been a delightful way to communicate in messages, and I'm happy to announce we're bringing them to comments across Facebook. It'll be available to all posts from people, in groups, and on events now."

These stickers are available currently only through the Facebook app and soon are expected to be on the web. Stickers in comments will rollout worldwide over the next day or so.

Facebook users can access these stickers by tapping on the smiley face icon on the right of the comment box. Tapping this would expand and show the default and purchased stickers of the user.

Baldwin revealed that stickers in the comments section started as a hackathon project in New York, where a prototype for the web version was built in a single night.

He wrote in the post, "When we turned it on for employees, they loved it. We later built it for mobile web at a hackathon in California, and the iOS & Android versions soon after."

How @UberFacts makes $500,000 a year via Twitter

By just tweeting out facts to his seven million-plus followers, a 23-year-old youngster is making $500,000 a year. Owner of the Twitter account @UberFacts, Brooklyn-based Kris Sanchez makes a moolah for tweeting sponsored links.

The links, when clicked by his followers, earn him between $0.01-0.03 per click, according to Fast Company, a New York-based firm that inspires a new breed of innovative and creative thought leaders.

"I joined Twitter to follow Britney Spears. But I did not have anything to tweet about. So I figured, hey, tweeting these facts would be a really good idea. It was just so I could feel like I was closer to her," Sanchez told Fast Company.

This is how he makes his millions.

A company called Social Reactor pairs social media influencers with advertisers, supplies him with galleries or other web pages that Sanchez links to in his Tweets.

He gets paid for every click those pages receive.

In his branded deals with companies like Ford and Paramount, a simple tweet, accompanied by a link and a hashtag, becomes a virtual slot machine, gushing out thousands of dollars.

Sanchez has also developed an UberFacts app that reportedly brings in $60,000 a week in ad revenue.

The app has been downloaded 1.5 million times till date.

Loneliness may make you a Facebook addict: Study

Loneliness may make you a Facebook addict: Study

Researchers have found that compared to non-lonely people, lonely people spend more time on Facebook.
Feeling of loneliness drives people to Facebook, according to a new study. Researchers found that compared to non-lonely people, lonely people spend more time on Facebook.

Lonely individuals who are shy or have low social support may turn to Facebook to compensate for their lack of social skills and/or social networks in face-to-face settings, the study found.

Hayeon Song, an assistant professor of communication at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, analysed data from relevant existing studies to conclude that there is a relationship between Facebook use and loneliness.

The researchers concluded that the relationship exists because the feeling of loneliness brings its users to Facebook, rather than because Facebook makes people lonely.

The researchers said they chose to focus on Facebook because it is by far the most popular online social media site, with people using it to share personal information, meet people and develop friendships.

Whether the impact of all that 'connectedness' is helping or harming human interactions is an ongoing topic in the media as well as in the scholarly community, Song said.

For several decades, researchers have been looking at whether internet use, in general, is psychologically beneficial or detrimental.

Basically, researchers have had two conflicting hypotheses about what they call the 'internet paradox,' Song said.

"Does spending so many hours with a machine keep people from making real connections with other people? Or, does it allow people who are shy or socially awkward a chance to connect with others in a way that's more comfortable for them than face-to-face communication?" Song said.

Song and her team's meta-analysis results, based on all the published studies, found that as loneliness increases, the time spent on Facebook increases.

This means, at least, that Facebook does not help in reducing loneliness even if we feel more connected while using it, Song said.

The research team looked at the cause-and-effect relationship between loneliness and Facebook use.

"We found that loneliness caused Facebook use rather than the other way around," Song said.

Non-lonely people use Facebook, but they also maintain rich personal communications and relationships without it, according to Song.

The research was published in the journal Computers in Human Behaviour.
