Ericsson signs 4G network deal with Bharti Airtel

Ericsson, the Swedish telecom gear firm, on Thursday said
it has signed a 4G network deal (or LTE) with Bharti Airtel,
the country's largest mobile operator .
The company, however, refused to divulge additional
information on the deal including the financial and circle
details.
"Airtel has selected Ericsson for FDD-LTE network,"
Ericsson India Head Chris Houghton told reporters in the
national capital.
Houghton, however, refused to comment when asked which
circle the deal had been signed for.
Bharti Airtel won 1,800 MHz frequency band spectrum in 15
circles including metro cities Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.
The Sunil Bharti Mittal-promoted firm plans to launch 4G
network pan-India using 1,800 MHz.
4G mobile Internet technology provides download speeds of
around 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) on the move and it
can go up to 1 Gigabits per second (Gbps) at a fixed
location.
Airtel had also won broadband wireless access (BWA) or 4G
spectrum in 2,300 MHz frequency band in four telecom
services areas of Kolkata, Maharashtra, Punjab and
Karnataka in 2010.
It later acquired Qualcomm, which had 4G spectrum in New
Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala.
The company already offers 4G services using TDD LTE
technology on 2,300 Mhz band in Ludhiana, Mohali,
Bangalore, Kolkata, Pune, Chandigarh and Panchkula.

Skype to bar calls on mobile phones, landlines within India

Over-the-top telecom player Skype on Monday said it will
stop calling facility from its application on mobile and
landlines within India from 10 November. “As of November
10, 2014 Skype will end support for calling within India,
meaning calls to mobiles and landlines from Skype within
India will no longer be available,” Skype’s parent company
Microsoft Corp. said in a statement.
Using a feature of Skype, a user can make video or voice
calls using Internet service for which a person will be only
charged for Internet consumed for the service. The
statement did not clarify reasons for the move. The
announcement comes within a week of Microsoft’s mobile
phone arm launching a new smartphone, Lumia 730, in India
which positions itself as phone fit for Skype calls and
videos.
Microsoft said, “Users in India can still make free Skype-to-
Skype calls worldwide, international calls to mobiles and
landlines and users outside the country can call mobiles
and landlines in India.” It added that Skype WiFi and SMS
messages are also available to users in India.
People prefer to use Skype for making free calls using
Internet service. The application has witnessed increased
adoption with boom in smartphone in India. Telecom
operators in India have made hue and cry over applications
like Skype cutting their revenue share.

Samsung to launch Galaxy Note 4 in India

Samsung has started sending invites to the Indian media for an event scheduled on 14 October where it is likely to announce the launch of the Galaxy Note 4, the company's new flagship phablet.

The invite does not explicitly mention the Note 4 but suggests that Samsung will showcase 'the next Galaxy.'

The launch event is scheduled days ahead of Diwali, one of the biggest Indian festivals. It's also the time when a large number of people shop for electronics and luxury goods. It's not clear if the phone would go on sale on the launch day but we expect the company to make it available before Diwali which falls on October 23.

Galaxy Note 4, which is now the top-end phablet in Samsung's portfolio, has a 5.7-inch display. Samsung has upped the display resolution in Galaxy Note series, from Full HD (1080x1920p) in Note 3 to QHD (1440x2560p) in Note 4.

Despite a higher-resolution display, Samsung says that Galaxy Note 4 will deliver 7.5% more battery life than its predecessor due to an optimized interface. The phablet has a 3,220mAh battery (just 20mAh more than that of Galaxy Note 3), and features fast-charging technology, so the battery can go from 0% to 50% in 30 minutes.Under the hood, the Indian version of Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has an octa-core processor (1.9GHz quad-core + 1.3GHz quad-core); the international variant has a 2.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, the most powerful in the world at present. The phablet comes with 3GB RAM, which contradicts many rumours that said Samsung will push the memory to 4GB with this device. The only storage option now is 32GB, with support for 64GB microSD cards for more storage.

The rear camera has 16MP resolution and comes with Optical Image Stabilization, a feature that has become common among smartphones nowadays. Samsung has become a part of the selfie brigade with a 3.7MP front camera that allows users to take wide-angle selfies (120-degree).

Galaxy S5 features like fingerprint sensor embedded in the Home key and heart rate monitor on the back also find a place in Galaxy Note 4. Samsung has also included a barometer and hall sensor in its new phablet.

On the software side, Samsung has used an interface that is largely the same as that of Galaxy S5. It also comes with additional software optimized to make use of the S Pen stylus. Compared to Note 3, users can multitask better in multi-window mode of Galaxy Note 4, which supports minimizing apps as floating widgets. It also has better text selection and crops selected areas on the screen for later viewing. The S Note app gets its own widget on the Galaxy Note 4, so that users can access the core functions of the stylus as soon as they unlock it.

Apple suppliers delay production of larger iPad: WSJ

Apple suppliers have delayed the production of a larger iPad to early next year, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The suppliers had planned to start producing the larger screen tablet in mass volume beginning in December, but have been struggling to produce enough new iPhones to keep up with demand, the WSJ said.

Foxconn Technology, which assembles iPhones and iPads, has 200,000 workers in China already putting together new iPhones and making items such as metal casings, the Journal said. Apple is expected to launch the new iPads at an event on October 16. Asian suppliers expect Apple's larger tablet to have a 12.9-inch liquid-crystal-display screen with a resolution similar to the iPad Air launched in October last year, the WSJ said.

Data research firm IDC said in August that it expected tablet sales to slow globally in 2014. Apple was not immediately available for comment. The company said it sold more than 10 million of its new iPhones in the first weekend they were available in September
